How to use it
Drop a screenshot on the page, paste one with ⌘V or Ctrl+V, or press Choose a file.
Pick a background: one of the five gradients, a plain colour, or a colour code of your own.
Set the padding. The default, 7% of the screenshot's shorter edge, suits most screenshots.
Choose a shape if you need one. Auto keeps your screenshot's own shape. 16:9, 4:3 and Square (1:1) grow the margin until the whole picture has that shape.
Press Download PNG, or Copy to paste it straight into a post or a message.
Doing it well
Pick a background that doesn't fight the screenshot. A busy screenshot looks calmer on the Graphite gradient or on Paper white, and a plain one can take the Sunset or Violet gradient.
Leave the shadow on when the screenshot has a pale edge, like a page or a window, so the edge doesn't melt into the background. Turn it off if the screenshot already has a dark edge.
Too much padding makes the screenshot look small. Start at the default and add a little at a time.
Do the other jobs first. If the screenshot has anything private in it, cover it with a solid block. If it needs arrows or numbered steps, mark it up. The backdrop goes on last, because it only adds margin round the finished picture.
The same backdrop, as you capture
VizShot does this in its editor, with the same five gradients, the moment you take the screenshot, and choosing None gives your capture back, pixel for pixel. How a backdrop works has the steps, and you can download VizShot and try it free for 14 days.
Questions
Is my screenshot uploaded?
No. The screenshot is opened, framed and saved inside your browser, and no request carries it anywhere. Your browser's network panel will show you if you want to check.
Does it change my screenshot?
Only its corners, if you leave Rounded corners on. Everything else inside the margin is the same pixels you dropped in, never scaled or cropped. Turn Rounded corners off and the whole screenshot is untouched.
What size is the picture I get?
Your screenshot's own size plus the margin. Auto adds the same margin on every side. 16:9, 4:3 and Square (1:1) grow the picture on one side until it has that shape, to the nearest whole pixel, with your screenshot in the middle. The margin on any side is never less than the padding.
How much padding should I use?
Start with the default, 7% of the shorter edge. It's shown in pixels beside the slider so you can see what it means for your picture. Add a little if the screenshot looks cramped, and take some off if it looks small.
Can I make it the right size for a post on a particular site?
Pick 16:9, 4:3 or Square (1:1) and check what the site itself asks for. The page has no sizes for particular sites built in, because they change. The three-step version with an app is on the screenshot background page.
Can I use my own colour?
Yes. Type a colour code such as 0E7490 in the Your own colour box. A six-digit code is used as soon as the last digit is in, and a three-digit code when you press Enter or click away.
