Add a backdrop
Put a colourful margin, rounded corners and a soft shadow around a capture, ready to post.
On this page
A backdrop wraps your capture in a coloured margin, which makes it look finished when you post it.
In the editor, press Backdrop in the tool rail.
Choose None or one of five gradients: teal, sunset, meadow, violet or graphite. Or make your own from a colour, a gradient or a picture.
Pick a Shape: Auto, 16:9, 4:3 or 1:1.
Set the Padding, the width of the margin. It's shown in the capture's own pixels.
Turn Rounded corners and Shadow on or off.
Shape#
Auto keeps the capture's own shape, with the same margin on every side. The other three grow the backdrop until the whole picture is that shape, with your capture in the middle. It only ever adds margin. The padding you chose is the least there is on any side.
Use 16:9 for a slide or a video, 1:1 for a square post.
Marks can sit on the margin#
With a backdrop on, you can draw on the margin as well as on the capture: a line of text under the picture, an arrow that starts outside and points in, a numbered step beside it. Pixelate only works on the capture itself, because there is nothing in the margin to blur.
What it changes#
A backdrop only changes what you save, copy or upload. The capture underneath isn't touched. Choose None again and you're back to exactly the original, pixel for pixel.
You can still crop and rotate with a backdrop on. They work on the capture, and the backdrop is drawn again around the result.
The saved file is the capture plus the margin, so it's a little bigger.
One undo undoes a whole drag of the padding slider, and one undo undoes a switch of backdrop or shape.
