Spotlight keeps one part of a capture bright and dims the rest, so the eye goes where you want it.

  1. In the editor, press F, or choose Spotlight in the tool rail. It sits after Highlight.

  2. Drag a box around the part to keep bright. Everything outside it dims.

  3. Set how dark the rest goes with the Dim slider in the floating bar. It runs from 20% to 90% and starts at 60%.

More than one#

Drag again for a second box, and a third. Each one stays bright, and so does the place where two of them cross. There is one Dim for the whole picture, so moving the slider changes them all.

What stays bright#

  • Arrows, text, numbered steps and every other mark you draw. They sit on top of the dimming at full strength, wherever they are.

  • The backdrop, if you have one. Only the capture dims, not the margin around it.

A pixelated area dims with the rest. A redaction is solid black either way.

Change or remove one#

Press V and click inside a spotlight to select it. Drag to move it, or press ⌫ to delete it. A spotlight moves, but it doesn't resize: delete it and drag a new one.

⌘ Z takes back the last box, and one undo takes back a whole drag of the Dim slider.
