Mark up a screenshot
Open a capture in the editor and add arrows, boxes, text, numbered steps and more. Marks stay movable until you save.
The editor is where a capture gets arrows, boxes, text and more. Here is how to open it and what each tool does.
Open the editor#
Press Edit on the card after a capture, click a tile in Recent Captures, or choose Open it in the editor in Settings › Capture to skip the card and go straight in.
The tools#
The tools are down the left side. Press a tool's key to pick it:
| Tool | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Select | V | Click a mark to move it, recolour it or delete it |
| Arrow | A | Drag from the tail to the point |
| Rectangle | R | A box |
| Ellipse | O | A circle or oval |
| Line | L | A straight line |
| Freehand | P | Draw with the pen |
| Text | T | Click, type, press Enter to finish |
| Numbered step | S | Click to drop a numbered badge: 1, then 2, then 3 |
| Highlight | H | Highlight text without hiding it |
| Spotlight | F | Drag a box to keep it bright. The rest dims. See spotlight |
| Pixelate | B | Blurs a region into blocks |
| Redact | E | Covers a region with solid black |
| Crop | C | See crop and rotate |
Hold Shift while dragging to keep a shape square or a line at 45 degrees.
Colour and thickness#
A floating bar holds eight colours and a line width slider. Click the slider and the arrow keys move it one step at a time. Changing the colour while a mark is selected recolours that mark. Where each new drawing starts is set in Settings › Images, under Line width.
Marks stay editable#
Your marks are kept as shapes, not pixels, until you save. That means you can still select, move, recolour and delete any of them. (They move, but they don't resize.)
With a mark selected, Esc lets go of it. With nothing selected, Esc closes the editor.
Undo#
⌘ Z undoes, ⌘ ⇧ Z redoes. On Windows it's Ctrl Z and Ctrl Y.
Need to hide something private? Read redact or pixelate first.
New to the editor? How to annotate a screenshot is the three-step version.
