Redact or pixelate?
Use Redact for anything private. It is a solid block that can't be undone once you save. Pixelate can sometimes be reversed.
Use Redact for anything private. Passwords, keys, email addresses, names, account numbers.
Redact (key E)#
Redact covers the area with a solid black block. Nothing of the original is visible, and once you save, nothing can be recovered from the picture. Redact never uses a blur.
Pixelate (key B)#
Pixelate turns the area into big blocks. It's handy for softening a face or making a background less distracting, but the editor's own hint says it plainly: "Pixelate is reversible. Use Redact for anything private." A blur or pixelation can sometimes be undone by someone with the right tools.
Using both#
If you pixelate over an area you've already redacted, the redacted part stays solid black.

Remember a capture is saved as a file before you edit it. Marks only change the image when you press Save, Copy or Upload. The save, copy or upload article explains what each does.
The three-step version is how to blur or hide part of a screenshot.
