Record your screen
Drag a region, record, stop. The video opens ready to play, saved as an MP4 beside your screenshots.
| Mac | Windows | |
|---|---|---|
| Record an area | ⌘ ⇧ 1 | Ctrl Shift 1 |
Press the shortcut, or choose Record Area from the VizShot menu. The overlay opens, this time in red, with "REC" on the size badge.
Drag over the part of the screen you want to record, and let go. Recording starts. A red line goes round the area, with the time and the size above it, and a small control bar appears at the bottom of the screen.
Do your thing. The bar shows a red dot, the time, Pause and a red Stop button.
Press Stop, or press the record shortcut again. The bar says "Saving", and then the video opens in VizShot's own player, ready to play.
The red line and the control bar are never in your recording. You can click and type right through the line.
From the player you can watch it, find the file, or upload it and copy a link. See watch and share a recording.
Pause and resume#
Press Pause on the bar, or click the bar and press Space. The line round the area turns amber and dashed, and the time holds still. The time you spent paused isn't in the video, so a 2 second clip, a 3 second pause and another 2 seconds gives you a file about 4 seconds long.
Your pointer is in the recording#
A recording shows your mouse pointer, so people watching can follow what you do. To leave it out, open Settings › Recording and switch off Include the pointer, under Picture. It's a separate switch from the one for screenshots, which starts off.
Where the file goes#
Recordings are MP4 files, which play in almost any player and in a browser. They're saved in the same folder as your screenshots. You'll see them in Recent Captures too, with their length.
Good to know#
On a Mac, the menu bar shows a red dot and the time while you record.
The VizShot menu changes to Stop Recording while you're recording.
If you quit VizShot while it's recording, it finishes saving the file first.
If VizShot or your computer stops suddenly mid-recording, it never leaves a broken-looking MP4 behind. Half-written files are cleaned up the next time VizShot starts.
After the free trial, starting a recording needs a key. A recording that's already running always finishes and saves.
